Polyurethane was first developed by Prof. Otto Bayer, as a replacement for rubber, during the first years of World War II. Following laboratory scale trials it started to be used in many areas of application such as flexible foam in 1950 and later in the automotive industry after the development of low cost polyols. Thanks to new formulations developed by scientists during following years, polyurethane has found many fields of application in our daliy lives. Polyurethane world consumption has been increasing by 5% annualy, and by 7-8% in the developing countries. With energy costs rising day by day, the value and areas of application of polyurethane foam as an excellent insulating material is also increasing.
